During the cold days that followed in January, Jed spent the majority of his time in Savannah’s company, whether it be walking the grounds or sitting by the fire. They discovered more about each other as each day passed. Jed told Savannah about Harland, Seth and his mother Madeline. She had taken his hands in hers as he told of the story of her death and her empathy for him was written upon her face. This only intensified his affection for her.

He did not know how he could keep his hands and lips from touching her, kissing her. Each day he yearned to take her into his arms and charm what he wanted from her. He stopped himself from seducing her. His love and respect urged him to behave himself. How long he could last was another story. Spending each day with his growing love for her was overpowering his control.

When January drew to a close he decided he could not accept her refusal much longer. Being in her constant presence was driving him to the brink. He ignored her constant refusal of his offerings of affection until one day in mid-February whilst walking through the budding apple trees he decided to throw caution to the wind.

“Savannah,” he began, and turned her to face him by capturing her arms in his grasp and pulling her in close. “I cannot, will not spend another day without touching you, kissing you, loving you. My injuries are healed and I am well enough to return to Washington and the army I serve under, but there is still one thing that keeps me here, and that is you. If you deny me right here, right now, then I will leave and return to the war; if you do not then I will stay here with you.”
